How to Add a Custom Domain to Your Blogger (Blogspot) Blog ?

Most of us when starts blogging, opt free blogging services such as Blogger (Blogspot) blog, Wordpress etc and keep on blogging for years using their sub domains such as abc.blogspot.com or abc.wordpress.com. There are many benefits of using a custom domain, the most important is that it will give your blog a professional look as it removes your sub domain and much more.



For adding custom domain to your Blogger (Blogspot) blog, you should have a valid custom domain. Hope you have already purchased, if not go get it from good domain registrars such Godaddy, Bigrock etc. It will hardly costs 8 to 10$ for 1 year.

NOTE- Buy from that domain registrar which offers you free DNS Management, otherwise you have to pay additional 8 to 10$ for DNS Management tool. There are many domain providers which offer free DNS Management. Go for them only.

  Adding custom domain to your blogger blog includes two steps:

   (1)   Adding your Custom domain.

   (2)   Verification of your Custom domain.


Adding Custom Domain to your blog.

   
   (1)   Sign in to your Blogger account.

   (2)   Go to your blog’s dashboard in which you want to add a Custom domain.

  

   
   (3)   Go to “Settings” and then “Basic”.

   (4)   Click on “Add a custom domain” under “Publishing”.


  
   
   (5)   Click “Switch to advanced settings”.

  

   (6)   Type your full domain URL in “Advanced settings” and save it.

  

   (7)   Blogger displays an error regarding your ownership verification to domain.

   (8)   Now we will have two CNAME’s (below snapshots), copy them to notepad and save it as we have to add them in our Domain provider DNS settings.




Verifying ownership by adding CNAME Records to your domain DNS settings.

  
   (1)   Open another tab in your browser and login to your domain provider account.

   (2)   Go to your DNS management.

  

   
   (3)   Click on CNAME records and then “Add CNAME Record”.

  

   
   (4)   Type “www” in “Host Name” and “ghs.google.com” in value, now click on save. You have added your first CNAME Record.

  

   
   (5)   Add another CNAME, copy the code “7axwsmc3waqt” from notepad and paste it in “Host Name” field and paste “gv-rwreyvchxfj6wd.dv.googlehosted.com” in value and save it.


NOTE- Above is an example; your CNAME records are different from mine.


Adding A Records. (Optional)

  
   (1)   Go to “A Records” under your DNS Management tool and click on “Add A Record”.

  

   
   (2)   We have to add 4 A Records which are common for everyone.

216.239.38.21

   
   (3)   Copy each ip from above in “Destination ip” and leave “Host Name” as blank.(naked URL without www)

  

   
   (4)   Add each record one by one and save it.


Update Blogger Settings.

  
   (1)   Go to your blogs “settings” and then “basic”.

   (2)   Try adding your custom domain, if it again shows error, leave it for some hours to update your DNS settings.

   (3)   Add again after some hours, and it’s done, Now your blog have your own professional domain name.
