This
tutorial is basically for newbie’s stating the importance of alexa and how to
submit your website with them? But before moving to our tutorial, let’s have a
look on Alexa and its importance. You have definitely heard many times about
‘Alexa’ and ‘Alexa rankings’ etc. so let’s see what actually they are?
Alexa
and its Importance- Alexa internet, Inc is a subsidiary company of amazon.com
which provides web traffic data. It is one of the best ranking tools available
online. It provides various important data and statistics of every website such
as global rank, country rank, backlinks, keywords and much more as it picks new
domains itself. So, it’s a good idea to submit your website/blog yourself and
claim your ownership. By claiming your site you can add more details such as
your contact details to your website Alexa profile which would help advertisers
and other people in contacting you. Website submission offers you some free
services but in order to get more valuable services you have to upgrade your
account to a premium one. Last but not the least you can use Alexa to compare
your traffic and other stats with your competitors. Now you understand the
importance of Alexa for a website.
Step
by step guide for submitting your website/blog to Alexa.
It
has three basic parts, which are:
(1) Creating an Account with Alexa
(2) Submitting Website to Alexa
(3)
Claiming submitted Website
Creating
an Account with Alexa
(1) Go to alexa.com and click on
‘Create an Account’ or you can also login with facebook but I would suggest you
to go for a custom account.
(2) Enter your ‘Email’ and ‘Nickname’
and click on ‘register’.
(3) Go to your Email and click on
confirmation link.
(4) Set your preferred password.
(5) Now you are ready for submitting
your site.
Submitting
your site to Alexa
(1) Go to Alexa and login there.
(2) Go to ‘Dashboard’ and click on
‘Add it now’.
(3) Choose intro (Free) plan by
clicking on ‘Sign Up’.
(4) Enter your website URL and click
on ‘Continue’.
(5) Your website is successfully
submitted to Alexa, The next step is to claim your site.
Claiming
submitted website
Alexa
offers us two different ways of claiming which are:
(a) Uploading verification file in
site’s root directory- For self hosted sites.
(b) Adding meta tag- For Blogger blog
(1) FOR WORDPRESS: if you have a self
hosted site or blog such as Wordpress or others then you have to choose the 1st
option, just download the verification file and upload the same to your site’s
root directory or you can use some plugins to add meta tag in your head
section. After that click on ‘Verify the file on your site’ and it’s done.
(2) FOR BLOGGER (BLOGSPOT) BLOG: If
you are using Blogger as your blogging platform then you have to choose the 2nd
option which is addition of verification id (Meta tag) in head section of your
template.
(3) Just copy the verification code
which looks like ‘<meta name="alexaVerifyID" content="johUOvdr2m_KsGlDsaNrSUaHxsY"
/>’.
(4) Now go to your blog’s dashboard.
(5) Go to ‘Template’ and then click
on ‘Edit HTML’.
(6) Press ctrl+f inside the code and
search for </head>.
(7) Paste the verification code (Meta
tag) just above it which we have copied in step 4 and save your template.
(8) Now go to Alexa verification page
and click on ‘Verify my ID’.
(9) Now you will get a message that
your site is successfully claimed.
(10) Click
on continue to add your public listing information.
Now you have successfully claimed your site. Although there are some limitations in free account such as you will not be able to add a logo, get detailed site metrics etc but its good for simple site owners and bloggers.
